We were asked to evaluate blog post or news items to help us prepare Proximity’s spring focus group sessions. Below is my summary of a Canadian Press article that criticizes social networking and its affects. I suggest Towson University should investigate this topic and make their own conclusions.
What Facebook, Twitter, and Cell Phone Texting Provides
Over the past five years, social networking (Facebook, Twitter, and even texting) has become a common communication feature in many people's lives. They provide a faster communication method, which benefits many businesses. It is cost efficient for businesses, small or large, global or local to use social networking as their PR's. Although Social Networking has many benefits, according to Susanna Kelley from the Canadian Press, it is the one to blame for an increasingly unacceptable number of post-secondary students who cannot write properly.
Why Social Networking Impacting Students Grammar is Important
While smiley icons, ignorance of punctuations, and word short-cuts may be acceptable in a private email between friends and family, it's not acceptable in the work/business place. According to the article many students do not know how to use commas; "[they] think commas are sort of like Parmesan cheese that you sprinkle on [their] words," said Professor Paul Budra, an English professor and Associate Dean of arts and science at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. Many students have no clue as to what a fragment is, or when to use punctuation. If these students continue with this ignorance they will have a hard time finding a job, or holding the job that they might already have.
